Community Involvement
2008 Community Advisory Update
As a global mining leader operating in communities throughout the world, Rio Tinto initiated a community policy ensuring one community is not treated differently than another. Within this policy is a strong belief in building enduring relationships with neighbors characterized by mutual respect, active partnership and long-term commitment.
Good management of government and community relationships is as necessary to our business success as the management of our operations. We understand the impact we have on the communities we live and work in. We also understand the economic impact Kennecott has through its employment, wages, and purchases within the valley.
Because of our long-term relationship with the Salt Lake Valley and the State of Utah, we have instituted several approaches to engage, monitor, and report to our stakeholders on our plans and interactions:
- Speakers and Listeners Bureau
- Community Feedback Line
- Community Advisory Committee
- Kennecott Community Giving program
- Kennecott Foundation
Mutual respect requires us to understand issues that are important to our neighbors and our neighbors to understand what is important to our business. Our community and environmental work is closely coordinated and takes into account peoples’ perceptions of the effects and consequences of our activities. We share our business plans and the environmental work we conduct with our stakeholders and our impacted communities.
Within the Kennecott Utah Companies, there is a Communications and External Relations team dedicated to working with our communities, elected officials and non-profit organizations:
