Requesting Corporate Funds

Kennecott is committed to actively participate with local communities by supporting projects that promote long-term mutual benefit to the communities in which we have a presence. Kennecott supports organizations that focus on civic and community development, education, environment, arts and culture. Kennecott is committed to supporting projects within the Salt Lake Valley that are aligned with our business objectives and advance social responsibility within our communities.

As part of our commitment to support local communities, we have developed corporate giving guidelines for organizations requesting funding.

Requesting funds
Kennecott will consider funding requests from organizations that meet the following criteria:
 

  • Relevance to supporting the objectives of Rio Tinto, Kennecott Utah Copper and/or Kennecott Land
  • Proof of qualifying non-profit status, including a tax-exempt determination letter from the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Located in Salt Lake or Tooele counties.
  • Fiscally sound and have strong management practices and accountability.
  • Able to describe the population to be served and where they are located.
  • Provide evidence that the service is a response to a valid need, is superior to other competing services and/or encourages collaboration with other organizations for maximum impact.
     

Corporate Giving Categories

  • Civic and Community Development  - We support organizations that promote cultural, civic, and community activities that focus on building stronger communities.
  • Education - We support educational and research institutions, both public and private, from early childhood through university level.  This includes programs that include the development of curriculum, literacy and school readiness and programs that help underserved students.
  • Environment - We support organizations that focus on sustainable development for the benefit of the community and the environment.
     

As a general rule, Kennecott will not support:

  • Establishment or support of endowments;
  • Coverage of operating deficits;
  • Capital campaigns;
  • Computers, software or related items;
  • Maintenance of existing facilities;
  • Conferences, conventions and events.


Application process
We will only accept corporate giving forms that are submitted via e-mail through the Kennecott website. We will not consider requests made by phone. The application must be completed in its entirety with additional support included as an attachment. The application should explain how the proposal meets one or more of Kennecott’s specific areas of focus. Download and e-mail corporate giving form.


Funding cycle
Kennecott will review requests for support three times a year. Requests may be submitted year round and will be reviewed as follows:

Civic and Community Development – March 30
Education – June 30
Environment – September 30
