Government and community relations

Kennecott takes a unique approach to working with surrounding communities. We choose to engage with our stakeholders and share our business objectives, environmental goals, and plans for our future. We then ask for feedback. We do this because honest and transparent relationships with our communities are as necessary to our business success as the management of the mining operations.

We promote active partnerships at international, national, regional and local levels. These relationships are based on mutual commitment, trust and openness. Our relationships with communities involve consultation prior to opening new facilities, when running existing facilities, and when closing facilities at the end of their productive lives. Our collaboration with local communities ensures a sustainable future for the communities we do business in and allows us to continue being a key economic driver.

Not only has Kennecott joined with local communities to provide sustainable improvements, we also plan for the future. For example, we have partnered with local organizations such as the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), the Utah Transit Authority (UTA), and the Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) to study and plan for future transportation needs in the Salt Lake Valley. Kennecott, along with two other property owners, donated land for the future Mountain View Corridor and the Mid-Jordan TRAX line. In doing so, these projects will come to fruition years before their scheduled time.

Political Involvement

As a company, Rio Tinto and Kennecott do not participate in party politics, make payments to political parties or individual politicians. The Rio Tinto employees in the United States have established a Political Action Committee (PAC) where employees voluntarily participate. The Rio Tinto PAC is run by a board of directors who determine contributions according to business objectives, not party affiliations. If you are seeking a contribution from the Rio Tinto PAC, please contact Gina Crezee at 801-204-2906 or at gina.crezee@riotinto.com

Rio Tinto represents views to government and others on matters affecting its business interests and those of shareholders, employees and others involved in our activities. By fostering such public dialogue, we contribute to the development of sound legislation and regulation that is relevant and appropriate to our business interests.
