Kennecott sometimes produces more concentrate than our smelter can process. In this case, we sell the concentrate -- containing about 28% copper -- on the open market to other copper smelters, which then refine it.
 
In the smelting process, we produce copper matte -- containing about 70% copper -- which is flash cooled and turned into granules. We usually consume all of this interim product at the smelter. But on occasion we have extra, which we sell to other smelters.
